Waterville Railroad Bridge 3214

Following the old NYCRR track from Stokesville to Jersey Shore this bridge crosses the Pine Creek in Waterville. It was built in 1901 by American Bridge Co, Elmira NY. It is now part of the Pine Creek Rails to Trails route.

English Center Suspension Bridge is a historic suspension bridge spanning Little Pine Creek in Pine Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. It was built in 1891 and has a single span measuring 300 feet long and 15 feet wide. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. Built by Dean & Westbrook

Historic Suspension Bridge 4364

Built in 1854-1856 the Wheeling Suspension bridge is the oldest bridge of it's kind in the US. But, with a gross weight limit of 2,000 lbs and a requirement that vehicles travel less than 45mph and stay 50' apart it's not practical for today's traffic and has been closed to all vehicles since 2019.

The Wheeling Suspension Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the main channel of the Ohio River at Wheeling, West Virginia. It was the largest suspension bridge in the world from 1849 until 1851. Charles Ellet Jr. designed it and supervised construction of what became the first bridge to span a major river west of the Appalachian mountains.

The Wheeling Suspension Bridge was designated a National Historic Landmark on May 15, 1975.

Benwood B&O Railroad Bridge 3886

Unless I rent a boat, I haven't found a good location to photograph the B&O Railroad Bridge in Benwood WV yet. But, I thought framing a portion of it through this electrical sub-station at JLE industries kind of works.

The actual date of construction is a mystery to me. There is evidence of the viaduct construction on the Bellaire side from 1870-1872. The metal truss spans date 1901-1905. At the time it was built it was the longest stone arch bridge in the USA

Wheeling Historic Bridge

Built in 1854-1856 the Wheeling Suspension bridge is the oldest bridge of it's kind in the US. But, with a gross weight limit of 2,000 lbs and a requirement that vehicles travel less than 45mph and stay 50' apart it's not practical for today's traffic and has been closed to all vehicles since 2019.

Oscillation is a significant concern for this bridge and noting how close to the banks the piers are built I can understand this is a real issue.

For those inclined to research this bridge, it is interesting the note the battle between Wheeling, to have this bridge built and Pittsburgh, who was concerned about the impact of this bridge on river traffic.

Walnut Street Bridge on the right. This is a restored pedestrian bridge. It was built in 1890 and is a tad shy of 1/2 mile long.

Wheeling Suspension Bridge 3274

The Wheeling Suspension Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the main channel of the Ohio River at Wheeling, West Virginia. It was the largest suspension bridge in the world from 1849 until 1851. Charles Ellet Jr. designed it and supervised construction of what became the first bridge to span a major river west of the Appalachian mountains. It linked the eastern and western section of the National Road, and became especially strategically important during the American Civil War. Because this bridge was designed during the horse-and-buggy era, 2-ton weight limits and vehicle separation requirements applied in later years until it was closed to automobile traffic in September 2019. The Wheeling Suspension Bridge was designated a National Historic Landmark on May 15, 1975.

Rupert Bridges

While the focus of this visit was the Covered Bridge, this Truss Bridge (background and girder bridge (foreground) run parrallel to the bridge and were pretty cool to see.

The Truss Bridge was built in 1883 and used by the Reading Railroad. It has been abandoned for years.

The Girder Bridge is currently used by the North Shore Railway.

Panhandle Bridge

Opened in 1903, the Panhandle Bridge carries two rail lines of the Port Authority "T" line across the Monongahela River in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The name comes from Pennsylvania Railroad subsidiary Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad, also known as the Panhandle Route, which operated over the bridge. Wikipedia

Old Stone Bridge

Built in 1870, the McGregor Stone Bridge , located in Monroeville, PA is designated as Historic Landmark. It was an active bridge until the early 1920's when Old Route 22 was opened.
