United Workmen Hall 3263

The 2300 block of Chapline Street has been an integral part of Wheeling's urban streetscape for over one hundred years.

Left: 2319 Chapline: This is one of the most elegant and richly detailed houses on Chapline Street. Designed by Edgar Wells for Dr. Gregor Ackermann in 1888, this house manifests a proliferation of architectural detail. The use of elaborate decorative embellishments affirmed the success and prominence of Dr. Ackermann in the Wheeling community.

Middle: 2315-2313 Chapline St. The Klieves Homes. Constructed in 1885. The Klieves brothers, Theodore and Bernard, were partners in the building and construction firm of Klieves Kraft and Company. Their success and capabilities as builders in Wheeling are apparent in their houses on Chapline Street. Their houses were designed to be identical, although today the Theodore Klieves house is missing some of the original decorative detail with which both houses were designed.

Right: 1868; This residence was built for Henry Schmulback, a leading Wheeling industrialist and president of the Schmulbach Brewing Company. This is a highly personalized building which features a brewery motif with hops decorating the trim. The initials H.S. have been etched into the glass windows of the double front door.

Historic Row House 3286

Part of the Chapline Street Row Historic District this three-bay Wheeling Italianate house has an arched door and windows covered with ponderous lintels, and a particularly elaborate cornice.

German Reformed Church 3279

St Stephen's German Reformed Church, 3600 Eoff Street
The congregation built its first church on this site in 1878. The current church building was dedicated on December 14, 1902. The three-story rectangular plan Romanesque Revival church has a hipped roof with a gable end at the southern bay. A square bell tower with pyramidal roof comprises the northern bay. The foundation is sandstone block and the walls are brick laid in running bond. The roof is covered with asphalt shingles. The front façade is asymmetrical. The bell tower features a pair of recessed wood paneled entry doors topped by a round arch opening and a stained-glass transom window.

This building was occupied in the 1890s by August Helmbrecht, merchant tailor. In 1898, the third story was the Ancient Order of United Workmen (AOUW) Hall. The three-story building sits on a generally rectangular plan except that the northwestern corner is clipped. It has a flat roof with parapet wall. The building sits on a sandstone block foundation, and the walls are red brick laid in running bond. A wooden storefront in the façade faces Jacob Street and returns around the angled corner and continues for one bay along the north elevation that faces 36th Street. Engaged cast iron columns divide the storefront lights. The transom level and some of the lights are covered with wood panels that formerly held signage. Access to the building is via a wooden one-light entrance door with intact transom. Two brick pilasters flank the entrance to the upper stories, which has been covered by painted wood panels. The storefront is topped by a cornice with egg and dart molding and a sandstone belt course. Additional sandstone belt courses unify the upper story windows, with some of the courses acting as window sills. The window openings feature flat arch rowlock lintels with decorative sandstone hoods. The second story window openings are partially bricked in and have non-original concrete sills under awning windows. Window openings at the third story are slightly arched with sandstone hoods.

McCusky House

1895 - This is one of the outstanding uses of varying architectural styles to create a building with good rhythm. The left side of the house combines the Mansard style with a hint of Romanesque (in the arched windows), and the right side has almost a Byzantine flavor in the tower with arched windows and wall finials. It is a good blend of mansonry and metal materials. The house was the home of W.O. McCusky, a metal wholesaler and retail dealer in oysters, sole agent for the celebrated Star brand, and his wife, the former Ella B. Phillips. Ms. Phillips was the great grandaughter of Wheeling founder, Ebenezer Zane

Historic N Wheeling 2840

Left to Right 653-653% N. Main Street, circa 1840's - The 1840's date for this vernacular double house may not be correct, but the building is quite old. The building is brick with stone lintels, sills and foundation. The roof dormers, open to the attic rooms, are segmented-arch shapes. The building was apparently built by a member of the Phillips family, a family heavily involved in boat building and other related industries, 651 N. Main Street. 1895 - This is one of the outstanding uses of varying architectural styles to create a building with good rhythm. The left side of the house combines the Mansard style with a hint of Romanesque (in the arched windows), and the right side has almost a Byzantine flavor in the tower with arched windows and wall finials. It is a good blend of masonry and metal materials. 647-649 N. Main Street, circa 1880's - This double house is in Italianate style. Window and door hoods are stylized flat arches with keystones. There are two pedimented-gable dormers. The original cornice, which probably was very decorative, has been removed and replaced with aluminum.

William Goering House

This Second Empire Style house was built about 1883. It has a high mansard roof, dormer windows and is asymmetrically massed. It is a gracious house with careful interior detailing. It was built for William Goering, an immigrant to the United States from Germany, who served as a bookkeeper and cashier for German-American companies located in Wheeling.

Samuel Bloch Mansion 2801

Samuel Bloch, co-founders of Bloch Brothers Tobacco Co., built his family mansion on National Road in 1902. He named it “Elmhurst” in honor of the numerous elm trees growing around it. After his death, in keeping with Bloch’s philanthropic ideals, the mansion was converted into a retirement community called “Elmhurst, The House of Friendship.”

Bishop Patrick Donahue was petioned by 8 local men to build the chruch in 1896. Verious degrees of contruction continued through 1930 to create one of the finest examples of Greek architecture.

Spagg House 2768

832 N. Main Street, circa 1900-1901 - The Spragg house has an eclectic form combining elements of Romanesque and Queen Anne architectural styles. The masonry workmanship is excellent. The owner, Martha E. Spragg was the wife of Dr. S.L.S. Spragg, a verysucessful physician and surgeon. The house served both as residence and office.

Historic Suspension Bridge 4364

Built in 1854-1856 the Wheeling Suspension bridge is the oldest bridge of it's kind in the US. But, with a gross weight limit of 2,000 lbs and a requirement that vehicles travel less than 45mph and stay 50' apart it's not practical for today's traffic and has been closed to all vehicles since 2019.

Henry List House 2726

Henry K. List House, 827 Main Street, Wheeling, Ohio County, WV

Built about 1858, this is a fine example of a house which incorporates elements from two design styles: The Adam Style, and the Romano-Tuscan Mode of the Renaissance Revival Style. This house was built for Henry K. List, a wholesale merchant and banker whose son, Ambrose, succeeded him as president of the City Bank of Wheeling and continued to live in this house until his death.
